Technical Report: Modules 7 of the Youth Climate Education and Fellowship Program
Conducted on November 20, 2024

As part of the Youth Climate Education and Fellowship Program, Modules 6 and 7 were conducted on November 20, 2024. The sessions focused on two critical aspects of climate governance: the role of media in climate action and the contributions of youth in implementing post-COP decisions. The objective of the program is to equip participants with the necessary knowledge and strategies to enhance climate advocacy and action.

The Role of Media in Climate Governance

Dr. Bakht Zaman, Assistant Professor at the University of Peshawar, led the session on the pivotal role of media in driving climate action. He highlighted the power of media in amplifying urgent climate issues, particularly in Pakistan, a country that faces significant climate challenges despite its minimal contribution to global emissions. Dr. Zaman emphasized the growing impact of citizen journalism, noting how mobile technology and social media have empowered individuals to actively engage in spreading climate-related information.

Dr. Zaman encouraged participants to improve their understanding of key climate terminology, such as weather, climate, and greenhouse gases, which are fundamental in addressing environmental issues in Pakistan. He stressed that clear communication is crucial, especially when using social media platforms to amplify messages about climate action. He also offered his support in publishing articles to further enhance the visibility and impact of climate initiatives.

Responding to a student’s concern about the media’s frequent focus on tree plantation campaigns, Dr. Zaman pointed out that other sectors, including construction, transport, and waste management, also contribute significantly to carbon emissions. He called for a more comprehensive approach that includes promoting sustainable construction practices, green transportation, and improved waste management.

Youth Contributions to Climate Action and Post-COP Implementation

Mr. Kashif Ali Sheikh, Executive Director of Transparency International Pakistan (TIP), delivered a session on the critical role of youth in advancing climate action, particularly in the context of implementing post-COP decisions. Mr. Kashif discussed various climate finance mechanisms, such as carbon markets, green bonds, and adaptation funds, stressing the importance of transparent systems for managing these funds, especially in a climate-vulnerable country like Pakistan.

He identified several key areas that require attention, including the development of carbon markets and the operationalization of loss and damage funds. Mr. Kashif emphasized the need for youth involvement in projects focused on reducing transportation emissions, implementing afforestation programs, and building frameworks for carbon markets. He also addressed the challenges of translating international climate commitments into actionable outcomes, calling for reforms and capacity-building in climate governance.

The session concluded with a brainstorming exercise aimed at identifying strategic initiatives to enhance climate awareness and advocacy. Proposed actions included establishing networking platforms to connect fellows with key stakeholders, fostering mentorship and knowledge exchange; organizing debate competitions and innovation showcases to encourage the development of youth-driven solutions; incentivizing impactful climate initiatives through rewards and recognition to encourage sustained participation; and engaging policymakers and practitioners to ensure the program’s outcomes lead to actionable climate solutions.

Modules 7 of the Youth Climate Education and Fellowship Program reinforced the significant role of media in shaping public perception of climate issues and the pivotal contributions of youth in advancing climate solutions. Participants left with a deeper understanding of how media and youth-driven initiatives can support sustainable climate action. The sessions exemplified the program’s commitment to fostering knowledge-sharing, dialogue, and empowering the next generation of climate advocates.

These modules provided a platform for participants to engage with experts, enhance their understanding of climate governance, and develop strategies for effective advocacy. The insights gained will undoubtedly contribute to advancing Pakistan’s climate action efforts and the global fight against climate change.
