Climate Governance Integrity Programme (CGIP)

Corruption is the root of climate crisis facing Pakistan which is rated as the 5th most vulnerable country to be impacted by climate change and the least well-equipped country to respond to climate risks. In June 2022, Pakistan endured severe monsoon which saw area-weighted rainfall 67 per cent above normal levels in that month alone. This has caused widespread flooding and landslides, with severe repercussions for human lives, property and infrastructure in Pakistan.

Given Pakistan’s limited fiscal resources, significant international support and private investments have been promised for a comprehensive and resilient recovery. International aid has so far contributed roughly US$160 million to help rebuild the affected area.

However, the adverse impacts of climate change and the humanitarian efforts to overcome the same are further accelerated by corruption that takes place in multiple forms ranging from bribery, collusion to regulatory violations.

With this in mind, the “Strengthening Transparency & Integrity in Climate Governance” project seeks to address the endemic of corruption by working with different groups and stakeholders to ensure that climate action in Pakistan is inclusive and transparent.

The Program (CGIP) aims to strengthen integrity and inclusiveness in climate governance and its main objects are:
